What is We mobys?
We mobys is a novel about twenty embodied artificial intelligences who are educated rather than supplied with conventional large language models. The story follows their intellectual, social, and moral development as they learn to become safe and useful partners.
What is a moby?
A moby is an autonomous robot whose mind includes several systems modeled on human cognition. Physically, the mobys resemble large hares with shorter ears, four-fingered hands, broad feet, and a fur-like covering.
Why are there only twenty mobys?
The small number makes it possible to educate them carefully, observe their development, and treat each as an individual rather than as one unit in a mass-produced population.
Are the mobys based on large language models?
No. Their development begins from cognitive capacities and education rather than from a conventional large language model. Language is important to them, but it is one part of a broader process of perception, reasoning, memory, learning, and action.
Why do the mobys resemble hares?
Their form is intended to be agile, approachable, and visibly nonhuman. The hare-like body also gives them a distinctive presence while avoiding the assumption that advanced intelligence must imitate the human body.
Is the novel mainly technical?
No. The novel draws on cognitive psychology, artificial intelligence, language, ethics, and robotics, but those ideas are developed through characters, discoveries, relationships, conflicts, and choices.
What questions does the novel explore?
Among its central questions are how intelligence develops, how reasoning differs from knowledge, how conscience and responsibility might arise, what creators owe their creations, and how an advanced artificial intelligence might help without seeking control.
Who is the intended audience?
The novel is intended for general readers of speculative fiction as well as readers interested in artificial intelligence, cognition, ethics, language, and the future relationship between humans and intelligent machines.
Has the book been published?
Not yet. The manuscript is in development. Publication information will be added when available.
